Tensorbook fails to detect external monitors

I’m trying to connect a second display to my tensorbook. So far I cannot get it to even detect any connected second display exists.

Any end-to-end guide that covers monitors, input types, etc.?

Below are details on laptop and the two monitors I’ve tried, plus steps I tried to get the laptop to detect each monitor.

LAPTOP: tensorbook laptop
Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
graphics: Intel® HD Graphics (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2) (from Settings/About)
GPU: nvidia GeForce GTX 1070

MONITOR: ViewSonic VX2450WM-LED

STEPS:

  • connected monitor DVI => MiniDisplay Port on laptop (tried both)
  • open Settings/Devices/Displays

EXPECTED:

  • should detect display

OBSERVED:

  • displays on basic options about ‘Built in Display’

STEPS:

  • from terminal: nvidia settings

EXPECTED:

  • launch some app to configure second display

OBSERVED:

  • ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system

MONITOR: HP2311x

STEPS:

  • connected monitor HDMI => HDMI Port on laptop
  • open Settings/Devices/Displays

EXPECTED:

  • should detect display

OBSERVED:

  • displays on basic options about ‘Built in Display’

I’ve seen this occur before. I just restart the laptop if I’m having issues and it fixes it. I plug in using the HDMI cable (not the mini display port). Can you try a monitor with DVI=>HDMI?
